Two businesses apply for the same credit line. Similar revenue, similar age. One gets approved, one gets declined, and the owner of the declined one never finds out why. The difference usually is not luck. It is fundability.
What Is Fundability?
Fundability is the overall picture lenders and credit providers see when they evaluate your company: not just a credit score, but dozens of verifiable details that either say “established, credible, low risk” or quietly trigger a decline.
What Lenders Actually Check
1. Entity & Compliance
A registered entity in good standing, an EIN, required licenses, and records that match exactly across your state filing, IRS records, bank account, and listings. Mismatched addresses and phone numbers are among the most common silent decline reasons.
2. Business Presence
A dedicated business phone that is listed, a professional website, a business email on your own domain (not gmail), and a real business address. Lenders verify all of it, often automatically.
3. Business Credit Reports
Your D&B file and PAYDEX, Experian Intelliscore, and Equifax Business report: how many tradelines report, how long they have reported, and whether payments are on time. Thin or empty files read as risk.
4. Banking & Revenue
Business bank account age, average balances, deposit consistency, and revenue. Many revenue-based lenders weigh your bank statements more heavily than any score.
5. Public Records & Application History
Liens, judgments, bankruptcies, UCC filings, and even how often you have applied recently. A burst of applications reads as desperation.
6. The Owner
Depending on the product, your personal credit may still be reviewed. The goal of building credit without a personal guarantee is to shrink this factor over time, not to pretend it never exists.
The Good News
Almost every fundability factor is fixable, and most are fixable fast. Matching your records, listing your phone, opening the right reporting accounts, and sequencing your applications correctly can move a business from automatic declines to approvals in a matter of months.
