Every strong business credit profile starts the same unglamorous way: with vendor accounts. Before the credit cards and the credit lines come the net-30s.
What Is a Net-30 Account?
A net-30 account is simple trade credit: a vendor lets your business buy now and pay the invoice in full within 30 days. (Net-15 and net-60 work the same way with different terms.) The magic is not the financing, it is the reporting: the right vendors report your on-time payments to the business credit bureaus, and those reported payments become your company’s first tradelines.
Why Net-30s Come First
- They approve new businesses. Many starter vendors approve companies with no credit history at all, checking only that your business is set up credibly.
- No personal credit check. Most starter vendors do not pull your personal credit or require a personal guarantee.
- They feed the bureaus. Reported net-30 payments build your D&B PAYDEX and your Experian and Equifax business files.
- They unlock the next tier. Store credit, fleet cards, and eventually cash credit lines all look for existing reported tradelines first.
How to Do It Right
- Set up credibly first. Entity, EIN, matching address and phone, business bank account, and a D-U-N-S number.
- Choose vendors that actually report. Not all do, and reporting practices change. Buying from a vendor that never reports builds nothing.
- Buy things you genuinely need. Office supplies, shipping materials, business services. Small orders are fine; the payment history is the point.
- Pay early or on time, every time. PAYDEX rewards promptness. One late payment on a thin new file does outsized damage.
- Add accounts in stages. A handful of reporting vendors paid well for a few months beats twenty accounts opened in a rush.
Common Mistakes
The three we see most: paying for “tradeline packages” from vendors that do not report; opening accounts before the business is set up credibly (so the applications get declined and the file starts messy); and letting invoices slip past 30 days while waiting for the score to grow. Slow is smooth here.
