How to Get a D-U-N-S Number (and Why It Matters)

If business credit has a front door, it is the D-U-N-S number. Before most vendors, lenders, and even some contracts will recognize your company, Dun & Bradstreet needs to know it exists.

What Is a D-U-N-S Number?

A D-U-N-S number is a unique nine-digit identifier that Dun & Bradstreet assigns to your business. It is free to obtain, and it is what creates your company’s business credit file. Your PAYDEX score, and everything vendors and lenders can look up about your company, is built on top of it.

D-U-N-S stands for Data Universal Numbering System. Dun & Bradstreet is the oldest and most widely used of the business credit bureaus, which is why this number tends to be the first thing a supplier checks.

How to Get a D-U-N-S Number

Dun & Bradstreet issues D-U-N-S numbers at no charge through dnb.com. The application takes about fifteen minutes if your paperwork is in order.

  1. Check whether you already have one. Search your business name in D&B’s lookup tool first. Numbers are sometimes assigned automatically, and duplicates cause problems later.
  2. Gather your details. Legal entity name, EIN, business address, phone number, entity type, year started, and number of employees.
  3. Apply free at dnb.com. Use the free request path, not a paid credit-builder package.
  4. Match every detail to your official records. Your name, address, and phone must be identical to your state registration and IRS filings.
  5. Wait for the number, then verify it. Once issued, look your business up and confirm that your Dun & Bradstreet credit report reads correctly.

Watch for the upsell: D&B markets paid credit-builder packages aggressively. You do not have to buy anything to get your number or to build your file the right way.

How Long Does It Take to Get a D-U-N-S Number?

Standard processing is free and generally takes up to 30 business days. D&B sells an expedited option that shortens this to a few business days, but most businesses do not need it. If you are starting a credit build now, apply early and work on the rest of your foundation while it processes.

Why It Matters

  • Vendors check it. Many net-30 vendors and suppliers pull your D&B file before extending terms.
  • Lenders check it. Banks and credit providers use your D&B data as part of their approval process.
  • Contracts require it. Government contracts and many corporate vendor programs require a D-U-N-S number to even apply.
  • No file, no score. Until your business has a D-U-N-S number and reported payment activity, there is nothing for other companies to check, and “no file” often reads like “high risk”.

Make the Details Match Everywhere

Before you apply, make sure your entity name, address, and phone are identical across your state registration, IRS records, bank account, website, and directory listings. Mismatched records are one of the quiet reasons lenders decline otherwise healthy businesses. This is part of the lender-compliance check we run in every Business Credit Analysis.

After the Number: Build the File

A D-U-N-S number alone does not create a score. You need accounts that report payment activity to D&B, starting with vendor and net-30 tradelines, paid on time, every time. That is the heart of how business credit works, and it is exactly what our business credit program walks you through.
